About John McLaren Park Tennis Courts

John McLaren Park Tennis Courts, located at 1398 Mansell St #1200 in San Francisco, CA 94134, offers a premier outdoor tennis experience designed to meet the needs of players at all skill levels. This facility features six well-maintained hard-surface courts that are available for reservation, providing an ideal setting for both casual play and competitive matches. The courts are equipped with lighting, allowing for evening games and extended playtime, which enhances accessibility for tennis enthusiasts with varying schedules[1][3].

Situated within San Francisco’s second-largest park, John McLaren Park Tennis Courts benefit from a scenic and vibrant environment that complements the sport. The park itself spans 312 acres and includes a variety of recreational amenities such as playgrounds, picnic areas, a golf course, the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater, McNab Lake, and the Coffman Pool. This diverse setting makes the tennis courts part of a broader community hub where visitors can enjoy multiple outdoor activities in a natural and welcoming atmosphere[3][5].

The tennis courts at John McLaren Park have recently undergone significant improvements as part of the Laver Cup Community Legacy Project, a high-profile initiative supported by tennis legend Roger Federer, the USTA Foundation, and Mercedes-Benz. This project involved the resurfacing and upgrading of the six public courts, enhancing their quality and accessibility. The renovation was celebrated by city officials and community partners, highlighting the courts’ role in promoting youth sports and expanding local tennis access. These improvements align with San Francisco’s broader efforts to position itself as a global sports hub, contributing to the city’s economic recovery and community development[2][4][7].

John McLaren Park Tennis Courts also serve as a vital resource for youth development programs, particularly through partnerships with organizations like Youth Tennis Advantage (YTA). YTA uses the courts as one of its five Bay Area sites to provide no-cost tennis instruction, education, and mentorship to young people from under-resourced communities. These programs emphasize not only athletic skills but also academic achievement and life skills, helping participants pursue higher education and personal growth. The courts thus play a crucial role in fostering social impact through sport, offering a pathway to opportunity for many local youth[4][7].

While the facility does not include an on-site pro shop, it focuses on delivering excellent court conditions and a friendly, inclusive environment for all players. Reservations can be made online, and the courts are open to the public, making them accessible to residents and visitors alike. The facility’s phone contact, +1 415-831-2700, provides a direct line for inquiries and reservations, ensuring convenient communication for users[1][3][8].

In summary, John McLaren Park Tennis Courts stand out as a well-equipped, community-centered tennis venue in San Francisco. With its recent upgrades, strategic location within a large urban park, and commitment to youth engagement, it offers a comprehensive tennis experience that supports both recreational play and social development. Beautiful courts - well maintained, shady in some areas. Courts 5/6 are not marked well and we went the back direction (where street parking is) and ended up traipsing through the woods for a little bit - had we gone the paved route would have been much easier. Courts 1-4 look like they have lights but are positioned higher on the hill (so maybe windier?). The park has a great view of the south side of the city.

Recently resurfaced, wonderful 6 courts to play on, watched Roger Federer and mayor Lurie play here to help promote the Laver Cup!

Courts are very sensitivity to rain/storms and often covered in leaves and twigs after storms. Be mindful of playing/reserving after it rains to make sure you’re not disappointed.

Pretty decent courts. There are no flood lights and there is no parking after sunset. But other than that it is a pretty good option when you just want to hit and don't have a court reservation.

Six tennis courts in sets of two, fully fenced and a nice shady set of trees she's benches to take a break in nearby. Some courts will have debris from the trees accumulating on the court. Bathroom is pretty poor.
